November 2019 to April 2020 - Major Works at Salem

As a fellowship at Salem wanting to reach out to the community of Barry we are embarking on major structural works to the church.  After finding dry-rot and woodworm in the pews, we have removed all the pews on the ground floor - the pews in the gallery are not affected and will stay.  While doing this work we found that the plaster was loose on the walls, so this was removed and has been newly plastered downstairs.  The floor will be taken up to replace any rotten joists, fit underfloor heating and insulation and re-lay as appropriate.  While removing rotten joists around the baptistry we found that the outlet had never been connected and the water from the baptistry had been soaking into the ground for the last 120 years - hence much of the dry-rot in the base of the pews and flooring.  It was decided that we cover the baptistry, making the rostrum stronger and firm to walk on and that we would buy a portable baptistry.  We also decided to make the church lighter by removing part of the wall from the church entrance and vestibule and will have electric sliding doors fitted.  Insulation will also be put into the roof space to help with retaining heat.  At the same time we have had a ramp built in the front of the church to improve accessibility for all.  As a local church we want to be able to use all of the buildings to expand our commitment to the local community.  It's 122 years since the church was build and we want it to be the centre of the community for another 122 years.  There is still much to do including painting inside and out but with the help of members and friends of Salem we can achieve all this in a relatively short space of time.

2008 - Children's Saturday Club - Pictures

Over the past 5 weeks at the Children’s Saturday Club, we've been using material entitled SUPERHEROES!!.  The five Superheroes were  David (David and Goliath), the small boy with the loaves and fishes, Samuel, Naaman and Josiah.  Each week along with a game, story, video, drama, fun worksheet, quiz and of course refreshments at our 'Cafe' -  the children had a craft session and each week they made a piece of armour which highlighted our super hero. Over the 5 weeks they made:

  1. Belt of Truth
  2. Helmet of Salvation
  3. Shield of Faith
  4. Breastplate of Righteousness
  5. Sword of the Spirit.

The children had such fun making each piece (as well as the adults), and on our last week we decided to have a mini photo shoot for all to see the full regalia.

As you can see we’re few in numbers but great on dedication and faithfulness as each week the children arrive full of enthusiasm, willing to learn and we all have lots of fun!

This coming Saturday (24th May 2008) will be our last until September as we are now beginning to prepare for the Summer Holiday Club where the children will partake in all the usual fun items that they do on Saturdays but BIGGER, BETTER and for a little longer. 10am - 12noon

I hope as a Church or a friend visiting this website that you will pray for the children and leaders that the Summer Holiday Club will be successful and each child however young will come to love and know the Lord Jesus as their Friend and Saviour.

We look forward to a week of fun!

June, 2004 - Building Work Commences

The £150,000 modernisation and renovation of the schoolrooms including new floors, new kitchen, new windows, new heating systems for the church and schoolrooms, new toilets (including disabled toilets) etc. has begun.  The work should take up to 22 weeks.  During this time the Sunday services will be held at Gladstone School Canteen. Please pray that the work will go to schedule that the costs will be contained and the money required will be forthcoming.  Over £100,000 has been raised or given by members of Salem for this work.  £45,000 has had to be borrowed, so has to be paid back.  The work could not wait any longer as the dry rot had caused a hole in the schoolroom floor and was taking hold of window sills and parts of the pews in the church gallery.
